Singam (2010)
Singam has become a popular franchise. Thanks to directors Hari and Suriya for engaging the audience in police action dramas. While the first film is more of a drama, the second and third installments have a racy screenplay and powerful villains, and the chase sequences keep everyone hooked onto the seats.
Bheemaa (2008)
Bheema wasn’t a big hit as expected when it was released. The climax was a bit of a letdown for Vikram fans, but as usual, Vikram gave everything for this gangster drama by director Lingusamy. His physique and action sequences were noteworthy enough, so there was a whole song, ‘Oru Mugamo,’ with popping action scenes.
Vishwaroopam (2013)
The Afghan-American spy thriller is new not only for Tamil cinema but also for the whole Indian territory. Kamal Hassan plays a RAW agent disguised as a Kathak dancer. The transformation scene where he reveals his true identity is an action sequence combined with Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy’s eclectic soundtrack. Let’s hope the sequel is released soon. Visvharoopam is considered one of the Best Tamil Movies.
Polladhavan (2007)
Vetrimaaran’s directorial debut is a riveting film about a commoner and the turbulence he faces when he crosses paths with a gangster over his lost bike. Pollathavan is an action thriller that takes its time to grow, but once the dispute starts, it takes the audience by surprise, especially the last action sequence between Dhanush and Daniel Balaji.
Kaththi (2014)
Vijay and A. R. Murugadoss’s second film is centered on farmer issues and the ruling corporates, but the duo did not disappoint with the action either. If the first fight with the assassins is one to applaud, the coin fight sequence is one that no director or action director would have dreamed of.
Saamy (2003)
Director Hari and Vikram created a cool, courageous, and interesting cop story with Saamy. Vikram plays Aaruchamy, the DSP of Tirunelveli district, who finds his own moral ways to survive corruption in the police department. This blockbuster is peppered with great chase and action sequences, and a sequel is on the way.
Pokkiri (2007)
The remake of the Telugu film of the same name, this Vijay starrer is about a cop disguised to take the mafia groups headed by Prakash Raj. Vijay’s acting as a carefree gangster is a winsome performance, and the film has high-octane sequences right from the start. What do we else expect in a gangster movie?
Billa (2007)
Billa is a remake of Rajinikanth’s 70s movie directed by Vishnu Vardhan and stars Ajith and Nayanthara. Billa is the first stylish action film Tamil cinema has seen. No shouting and growling, this film is set in Malaysia to have amazing car chase sequence (who better than ‘Thala’ for chase sequence) and how can one forget Nayanthara’s entry.
Aaranya Kaandam (2010)
The first neo-noir film of Tamil cinema, released in 2010, Aaranya Kaandam, is a classic in its way. This gangster drama with actors like Jackie Shroff and Kishore is ahead of its time. The action sequence when Kishore learns about Jackie Shroff’s plan is one dreaded sequence, and also the fight between two gangs later, with one of the best re-recordings by Yuvan Shankar Raja.
Beast (2021)
Beast is directed by Nelson and stars Thalapathy Vijay and Pooja Hegde in the lead roles. It is a pure action entertainer film loosely based on Bruce Willis’s Die Hard (1988). A shopping mall is hijacked by Terrorists, and Veera Raghavan (Vijay), an ex-RAW agent, has to stop them.
Vikram (2022)
Vikram, starring Kamal Haasan, Fahadh Faasil, Arjun Das, etc, is the sequel, or you can say the film is part of Kaithi Universe, also called Lokesh Kanagaraj Universe. Vikram is an action entertainer with lots of twists and turns in the film; BGM is top-notch and one of the best Action films in Tamil Cinema.
