Orange is the New Black is a comedy-drama TV series featuring the life of Piper Kerman during her tenure in prison. Created by Jenji Kohan in 2013, the series is based on real-life Piper Kerman’s memoir titled Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison. The series stars Taylor Schilling as Piper Kerman and Laura Prepon as Alex Vause, Piper’s love interest. Currently, Orange is the New Black is Netflix’s most-watched original series.
Mind Hunter
If you are into criminal psychology and wish to know more about criminal behavior, then Mind Hunter is a great series to look out for on Netflix. Created by Joe Penhall, Mind Hunter is based on a real crime book Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit penned by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker. This crime drama is set in 1977 and covers the early days of criminal psychology and criminal profiling at FBI.
A Series of Unfortunate Events
Based on Lemony Snicket’s children novel of the same name, A Series of Unfortunate Events is a black comedy television series streamed on Netflix. It features an exciting cast of Neil Patrick Harris, Patrick Warburton, Malina Weissman, K. Todd Freeman, Presley Smith, and Louis Hynes. The title of the series is justified as the series tries to unravel various mysteries and keeps us interested episode by episode.
El Chapo
Based on the real life of Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, El Chapo is a crime thriller produced by Netflix. Set in the year 1985, the series follows the rise and fall of El Chapo. This crime thriller guides us through his early life as a low-level member of the Guadalaraja Cartel, his journey of becoming the head of the Sinaloa Cartel, and finally his downfall. The series features Marco de la O in the titular role as El Chapo.
The Get Down
The list of best Netflix original series will be incomplete if there’s no musical drama show in it. The Get Down is just that. Created by Baz Luhrmann and Stephen Adly Guirgis, the series takes place in the 70s. The Get Down premiered in 2016 and the first season contained six episodes. The series is all about the disco dancing from the 70s that picked up in South Bronx region of the New York City. The series ended after the second season.
Dear White People
Dear White People is a satirical comedy series that inevitably take you on a laughter ride. Created by Justin Simien for Netflix, Dear White People is based on the film of the same name released back in 2014. The series follows a group of students of color and the discrimination they face at a predominantly white school. Owing to the racist theme, the series attracted some criticism and raised some controversies initially.
Jessica Jones
Jessica Jones is another crime drama television series based on a Marvel Comics character of the same name. Created by Melissa Rosenberg, Jessica Jones shares the same continuity and timeline as the other films and TV series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The lead character of the series is also a part of another crossover series titled The Defenders. Krysten Ritter plays Jessica Jones, who is a former superhero with superhuman strength but now runs a detective agency.
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Among all the action, crime, musical, fantasy, and political series, we can’t miss a sitcom series on the list of best Netflix original shows. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is your sitcom dose on Netflix. Created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, the series follows the life of a 29-year-old Kimmy Schmidt, the titular character, who is trying to settle down in New York City after surviving from a doomsday cult based in Indiana. Ellie Kemper plays the titular character in the series.

Master of None
Master of None is another comedy-drama TV series streamed on Netflix. Created by Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang, the series follows the life of a 30-year old struggling actor and covers his professional, romantic, and cultural experiences. One of the series creators, Aziz Ansari also plays the lead role in the series. The title of the show is inspired by the famous figure of speech, “Jack of all trades, master of none.”
