Adult Bollywood movies: Adult Content in Bollywood films is often a controversial topic in the media. When I talk about adult Hindi films. Compared to Hollywood, Indian films are quite resistant to the display of affection or lovemaking.
However, lately, Bollywood filmmakers have become bold in their filmmaking style, and kissing scenes and sometimes lovemaking scenes are kind of common nowadays. There’s no hush-hush about these scenes as earlier and films featuring such scenes are most often released with a U/A certificate instead of A.

‘A’ certified films in Bollywood are often under scrutiny by the Censor Board. Most recently, there have been a lot of incidences where CBFC has censored scenes and dialogues from the films considering them inappropriate.
Well, despite such conflicts and pressure from CBFC, there have been a lot of films produced in Adult Bollywood Films focused entirely on ‘A’ certified content or featuring some dialogues and scenes in the film.

Kamasutra: A Tale of Love (1996)
Well, a list of anything even close to A certified films is incomplete without the mention of the 1996 Indian film about historical romance film. The film is not actually a Bollywood film but considering it as the first-ever bold move by India in this genre. The film is directed by Mira Nair and features Indira Varma, Rekha, and Naveen Andrews in important roles. The film is based on the ancient Indian text, the Kama Sutra.

Mera Naam Joker (1970)
Mera Naam Joker can’t be totally considered as an 18+ film. Directed by Raj Kapoor, who also portrayed the titular character in the film, Mera Naam Joker is a pure entertainer. However, it has a nude scene featuring Simi Garewal. The film basically follows the life of Raju, portrayed by Raj Kapoor, and his journey to become one of the most loved clowns as well as his failure in love.

Utsav (1984)
Directed by Girish Karnad, Utsav was first of its kind sensual movie in Bollywood. The film didn’t have a lot of scenes but still, Utsav was given “A” certificate as it was a bold film in the 80s. The film starred Rekha in the lead role whereas Shekhar Suman, Shashi Kapoor, Neena Gupta, and others played important roles.
Siddhartha (1972)
Well, Siddhartha is not technically a Bollywood film or a Hindi film either. However, this 1972 American film featured a complete Bollywood star cast. Directed by Conrad Rooks, the film tells the story of a young man Siddhartha, portrayed by Shashi Kapoor, who is embarked on a journey to find the meaning of life. The film is based on Herman Hesse’s novel of the same name and features some scenes between the lead pair, Shashi Kapoor and Simi Garewal.
Aastha: In the Prison of Spring (1997)
Aastha: In the Prison of Spring is a 1997 Bollywood film starring Rekha, Om Puri, Navin Nischol, and Daisy in pivotal roles. Directed by Basu Bhattacharya, the film tells the story of a married woman, portrayed by Rekha, who turns to prostitution for material comforts that her husband couldn’t afford.
Ek Chhoti Si Love Story (2002)
Ek Chhotisi Love Story is a 2002 Hindi film featuring the love story between a young teenage boy and a woman in her late 20s. The film stars Manisha Koirala and Aditya Seal in the lead roles. The film is not considered bold just because of its plot but for some scenes featuring Manisha Koirala such as masturbating in the bathroom. Directed by Shashilal K. Nair, the film is an adaptation of Polish film titled A Short Film About Love.
Jism (2003)
Jism is a 2003 debut film for John Abraham and also the first film featuring him opposite Bipasha Basu. The film justifies the title meaning body and is one of the first A certified thrillers of Bollywood that opened the gates for such genre. Directed by Amit Saxena, the film tells the story of an alcoholic lawyer who gets trapped by a sensuous woman and ends up in a murder conspiracy. Jism is a remake of 1981 Hollywood film Body Heat.
Murder (2004)
After Jism, Vishesh Films realized the demand for thrillers in Bollywood. Their next venture in this genre was the 2004 thriller film Murder. The film is directed by Anurag Basu and is an unofficial remake of Hollywood film Unfaithful starring Richard Gere and Diane Lane. The film made Emraan Hashmi an overnight star and it was one of his first films that would eventually title him as the Serial Kisser.
Julie (2004)
Julie is yet another 2004 Hindi thriller film starring former Miss India Neha Dhupia in the titular role. Directed by Deepak Shivdasani, the film tells the story of a girl next door from Goa who moves to Mumbai after she feels betrayed by her boyfriend. She moves to Mumbai hoping for a change but at every step, she feels used by men just like her boyfriend and eventually turns to prostitution.
Hawas (2004)
While it is not as popular as other 2004 thrillers, Hawas makes it to our list as it was among those films that displayed some courage. Directed by Karan Razdan, the film is also a loose adaptation of the 2002 Hollywood thriller Unfaithful. The film stars Meghna Naidu, Shawar Ali, and Tarun Arora in the lead roles.
Girlfriend (2004)
Fire was the first Indian film to feature a lesbian relationship, however, the 2004 thriller Girlfriend offers a bold approach towards homosexuality which is considered not just a taboo in India but also illegal. Directed by Karan Razdan, the plot of the film revolves around a love triangle between the three main characters portrayed by Isha Koppikar, Amrita Arora, and Aashish Chaudhary. The film also features a sensuous lovemaking scene between the two lead actresses.
Sins (2005)
Directed and produced by Vinod Pande, Sins is a 2005 Bollywood A certified film. The film created some controversy owing to its plot revolving around a Catholic priest and some topless scenes. The story of the film was inspired by an incident in 1988 in which a priest was convicted of sexual harassment and murder ending in a death sentence. The film stars Shiney Ahuja and Seema Rahmani in the lead roles.
Love Sex Aur Dhokha (2010)
Love Sex Aur Dhoka is a 2010 anthology film featuring three different short stories. Directed by Dibanker Banerjee, the film revolves around three sub plots such as MMS scandals, sting operations, and honor killings. The film is entirely shot on a digicam and this makes it the first film in Bollywood presented in found footage format.
The Dirty Picture (2011)
The Dirty Picture is a Bollywood Biopic Film, based on the life of Silk Smitha, an actress known for bold roles in several South Indian films. Although the film is touted to be a biopic on Silk Smitha, the filmmakers have stated that the film is not entirely based on Silk alone but also some of her other contemporaries like Disco Shanti. Directed by Milan Lutharia, the film was a new benchmark in Vidya Balan’s career. The film also starred Naseeruddin Shah, Tusshar Kapoor, and Emraan Hashmi in the lead roles.
Hate Story (2012)
The 2012 thriller film Hate Story is basically a story of vengeance. However, considering the few intimate scenes and the bold content throughout the film, Hate Story earns a place in the list of best A films of Bollywood. Directed by Vivek Agnihotri, Hate Story tells the story of a young girl who seeks revenge against a powerful man. The film stars Paoli Dam, Gulshan Devaliya, and Nikhil Dwivedi in the lead roles.
Jism 2 (2012)
Jism 2 is not a sequel to the first 2003 thriller film Jism. However, it takes the legacy of Jism franchise featuring a story in an erotic manner. The film features former pornographic actress Sunny Leone in her Bollywood debut alongside Randeep Hooda and Arunoday Singh. Directed by Pooja Bhatt, the film tells the story of a porn star who is hired by Indian Intelligence agents to trap a dreaded assassin. The twist in the tale is the fact that the assassin was the former lover of the porn star.
Nasha (2013)
Poonam Pandey became a heartthrob for a lot of young boys out there after her bold statements and pictures on social media. Since then, she has been gaining followers and it was only a matter of time that she would be cast as a lead actress in a Bollywood film. The wait ended with 2013 Nasha, where she is romancing with a teenage boy. The film stars Shivam Patil as the teenage boy alongside Poonam Pandey. Nasha is directed by Amit Saxena.
B.A. Pass (2013)
B.A. Pass is a 2013 Hindi neo-noir film starring Chak De fame Shilpa Shukla and Shadab Kamal. Directed by Ajay Bahl, the film is based on a short story titled The Railway Aunty penned by Mohan Sikka.
Mastram (2014)
Mastram is a fictional biography film featuring the life of an anonymous author called Mastram. The film stars Rahul Bagga and Tara Alisha Berry in the lead roles. Directed by Akhilesh Jaiswal, the film tells the story of a bank clerk who is also an aspiring writer. His persistent effort to succeed in writing leads him to write stories in Hindi and eventually, his work becomes popular and his pen name Mastram gains acknowledgment as a pornographic writer.
Hunterrr (2015)
Hunterr is a 2015 adult comedy with sensual scenes. The film is directed by Harshavardhan Kulkarni and features Gulshan Devaiah, Radhika Apte, and Sai Tamhankar in pivotal roles. The film follows the life of Mandar Ponkshe, played by Gulshan Devaiah, However, everything changes for the Hunter when he finds love eventually.
